“Shockwave therapy, more formally known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), uses high energy sound waves to stimulate cellular repair. The treatment promotes an inflammatory-like response in the tissue being treated. The body then responds by increasing the blood flow and metabolism to that tissue, which accelerates the body’s own healing processes. Chronic injuries are often the result of a failed natural healing response. Shockwave therapy helps by returning the tissues to a more acute phase of the healing process, which promotes a more complete recovery. Additionally, shockwave can help to break down scar tissue and calcified deposits in tendons and ligaments. By promoting natural tissue regeneration, shockwave therapy can relieve pain, improve function, and support long-term recovery.
It is usual for between 3 to 6 shockwave treatments to be required, as the treatment works by an accumulative process. More severe, chronic conditions can take more. The treatments will usually be spaced one week apart. Treatment is most effective when done alongside a regime of appropriate exercises or a period of rest from the aggravating factors. We would always advocate a full assessment by one of our physiotherapists before shockwave therapy is implemented, to ensure it is the correct approach for you.”
